Clarity on instructions for installing the Woodland Asset Pack?

0

Hello,

I'm new to Lumberyard. I'm drooling over the Woodland Asset Pack located here: http://docs.aws.amazon.com/lumberyard/latest/userguide/sample-level-woodland-assets.html

My first question would be: I'm using Lumberyard version 1.11, but the Woodland Asset Pack says, "This package is compatible with Lumberyard 1.9 and earlier." Does this mean that it won't work for version 1.11?

Assuming it does work, I'm a bit confused on how to add it to my Level. My Project Configurator doesn't list my level in it. (What's the difference between a Level and a Project?) And when I try to create a new project ... well, that opens a whole other can of worms. It requires that I have Visual Studio 2015. That seems like an odd requirement just to use some new tree assets. I'm totally confused.

I know that I've covered a lot of ground here, so let me ask it this way. What are the minimum steps I need to take to use the Woodland Asset Pack assets?

*** UPDATE ***

The Gems documentation has helped. Here's a good article about where to download Visual Studio 2015. Hopefully I'm on the right track. I'll update this question in the next few days with my progress.

Hey @REDACTEDUSER

I'm relatively new to LY myself, but I'll see if I can answer your questions. Will the 1.9 assets work? Yes, but you might have to do a more manual setup. I downloaded the Woodland Asset Pack and saw it contains a Gem folder. I would first suggest adding the contents of Gem to your project's Gem folder. Then open the Project Configurator and see if it is listed under "Enable Gems." If you find and enable it, you will need to compile your project.

HOWEVER, in the Gem folder there are also all of the CGF, MTL, and texture files and I think it would be simpler to just copy those assets/folders into your folder structure. Once the Asset Processor has done it's job, you should be able to drag and drop them from the Asset Browser into your level. Then just assign the corresponding material.

As for Levels vs Projects, you can think of it like a Word document inside a folder. The level is the document that has whatever you put in it. You can have multiple documents/levels with different words/assets in them, but they all exist within that folder. The folder is the project. Hope that helps.

Thanks! I did eventually bumble through the process. I had to install Visual Studio 2015, and during one step, I recall having to run one of the programs (maybe the Setup Assistant?) using "Run as administrator" in Windows. Thanks for your insights on the Levels vs Projects.

EDIT EDIT: Apparently, given this url above, https://docs.aws.amazon.com/lumberyard/latest/userguide/sample-level-woodland-assets.html, we are to download this 'legacy' item and use place in GEM folder. I waS a tad confused at first, bc why would we be installing legacy anything ? THat could be there are NEW packages that only work with current 114 right ? I think these things need better explantions bc legacy does certainly NOT mean 'current'. WE all want tobe working with current packages, no ? ;)

HI , just wondering,,b4 I get too far and wonder whats wrong,- I see that woodlands assets are no longer being shown on lumberyard download page,, is it bc its now included in the engine/folderx ?

If not, are we supposed to grab it from the LEGACY download area..that makes no sense, if its legacy that means its outdated,,where therefore as we suppose to get woodlands assets if its not included now in engine ?
