Inter-region multicast routing using transit gateway peering

1

Is it possible to do inter-region (inter-vpc) multicast routing using transit gateway peering connections? If not natively supported, can the result be achieved using specific routing rules (i.e. forward packets with destination 224.0.0.1 to transit gateway peering attachment)? I'm not very familiar with both AWS networking and multicast, so any pointers would help.

  • also struggling with this, did it solved yet? do we have any other options

Hello,

Unfortunately Multicast over TGW peering is not supported, see the below comment from the documentation:

Multicast routing is not supported over AWS Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, peering attachments, or transit gateway Connect attachments.

See the complete list of considerations for Multicast on transit gateways here

As an FYI, see Multicast Reference Architectures with AWS Transit Gateway, here.

  • Is there a plan to implement this in the future?

  • Hi, AWS does not publicize the roadmap items, I would suggest to keep an eye on https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new, then filter by 'Networking and Content Delivery' and choose 'AWS Transit Gateway' I also modified my answer and included the reference architecture for Multicast on AWS, hope this helps.
