We can view the metrics (including number of queries) for each hosted zone in CloudWatch, and I would use this in combination with Route 53 query logging to get a better idea of what is taking place within your hosted zone.

From a cost perspective, I would drill into AWS Cost Explorer, selecting Route 53 for the service in question, and Usage Type for the dimension to better understand how queries are affecting your Route 53 pricing.
