Should ADD COLUMN in Redshift be slow?

I have a Redshift table with approx. 25 million records. I need to add a new column to it using ALTER TABLE ... ADD COLUMN ... but I'm finding this to be very slow.

Given RS is a columnar database, I would have expected this to be very quick. Is this a correct assumption, or not?

Hello, Yes , adding a new null column to a columnar database is relatively fast . Have you already tried to do this operation and its slow ? If so , can you please look into the perfomance metrics of the database
