"ubuntu has been blocked by the current security policy" error after updating AWS DeepRacer Device to the Ubuntu 20.04

1

I was following this guide (https://docs.aws.amazon.com/deepracer/latest/developerguide/deepracer-ubuntu-update-instructions.html) to flash Deepracer device. But after step 4, the boot USB loaded a temporary ubuntu UI with an icon on desktop to install ubuntu 20.04. This isn't what the documentation describes in step 5 onward.

After installing the new OS and restarted, I got an error "ubuntu has been blocked by the current security policy". Quick google search pointed out that I have to disable "secure boot", but this option isn't found anywhere in BIOS.

I went back to the boot device to retry installing many times to no avail. What do to now?

Hello, sorry to hear you're having problems updating your car. During the install process a live version of Ubuntu 20.04 is run, once the desktop is running a shell script runs that does the installation on the software on the car, there is no need to click the "Install Ubuntu 20.04" icon. Once the install script has finished the shell script terminates, (takes 15 - 20 minutes) at this point the car should manually be rebooted (unlike the 16.04 install the car doesn't automatically reboot following the install)

I've used the link you reference to update cars with both the 0.0.6 and 0.0.8 BIOS with no issues. If you continue to have problems follow up on this thread and I'll get in touch with the engineering team.

Hope this helps.

  • Hi DavidFSmith,

When the desktop started, I did see a terminal window that ran for about 3~5 mins and then disappeared, after that it was just the desktop UI itself. I left it there for a few more minutes and then the monitor turned off which usually is a sign of inactivity, moving mouse or enter any key would show the desktop again but nothing was running.

Was it the same experience on your side?

  • Hello, any update so far?

  • @lamhng did you manage to fix the issue? I'm facing the same :/

Hello, Thank you for your patience. Can you try to recreate the flash drive to flash the DeepRacer with Ubuntu 20.04 using the guide here: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/deepracer/latest/developerguide/deepracer-ubuntu-update-preparation.html

Once you have recreated the flash drive, can you retry the rest of the steps mentioned in the guide: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/deepracer/latest/developerguide/deepracer-ubuntu-update-instructions.html

Let us know if you still face the issue. Thank you.

  • I'm facing the same problem, and updating to Ubuntu 20.04 does not fix it: I'm still facing the "blocked by the current security policy" error. Is there a way to disable secure boot?
