Can't Upload to WP Subdirectory w/ SFTP

0

I'm trying to use Cyberduck and BBEdit on Mac OS to download a .css file, edit it, and upload the changes. The error message reads, "Upload style.css failed. Permission denied. Please contact your web hosting service provider for assistance."

I've tried the steps from https://docs.bitnami.com/aws/how-to/troubleshoot-permission-issues/#you-can-t-upload-a-file-via-sftp to no avail: my SFTP username is bitnami, but even if bitnami owns the directory and has 0775 permissions, I can't upload. The issue isn't preventing me from logging in with the SSH key pair; I can navigate and download just fine.

Please let me know if you have any ideas or would need more details. I'm pretty clueless. Thanks for your help!

Hello @feisthammel,

Thanks for using Lightsail!

What is the directory you are attempting to upload the CSS file? Depending on the instance type you are working with, some directories need root permissions. On a Wordpress instance for example, I was not able to upload a file to "/home/bitnami/apps" directory and received the exact same error as you reported. Uploading directly to the "/home/bitnami/apps/wordpress/htdocs" directory however works as expected.

Hope this help you! Let us know.

After some noodling around I found I could indeed upload elsewhere and isolated the problem to BBEdit and/or Cyberduck. To my great shame--and also relief--I updated BBEdit and it's working like a charm.

Thanks for taking the time. Sorry for raising such a trivial alarm!
