For your personal project not related to the L3 workshop, you should generally use the latest available version (4.24.0) of the AWS Blu Age Transformation Engine, as it would contain the most recent features, bug fixes, and security updates.

The key differences between these versions include:

  1. Version 4.8.0 and later (including 4.10.0, 4.16.0, and 4.24.0) have the "Only Weather Report" option enabled by default, which restricts output to only generate weather reports in XLSX format instead of full Java/Groovy outputs. If you need the complete code generation, you'll need to disable this option when running transformations.

  2. Version 4.2.0 is specifically referenced in the L3 workshop documentation and doesn't have the "Weather Report Only" default setting. This version generates full Java/Groovy outputs without requiring additional configuration changes.

  3. Newer versions likely include performance improvements, additional features, and bug fixes compared to older versions.

Since your project is not related to the L3 workshop, you won't face the compatibility issues that workshop participants encounter when using newer versions with workshop-provided WAR/JAR files that are based on version 4.2.0.

Just be aware that if you need full code generation rather than just weather reports, you'll need to disable the "Only Weather Report" option in the newer versions when running transformations.
