We successfully deployed on November 6. However, the deployment on November 19 failed with an “insufficient CPU” error. We did not change any infrastructure settings or any code related to the deployment process during this period. Why did the deployment fail this time?

Based on the information provided, your Amazon ECS deployment failed on November 19 with an "insufficient CPU" error, despite having successfully deployed on November 6 with no changes to infrastructure settings or deployment code.

This type of failure can occur due to resource constraints, even when your configuration hasn't changed. Here are some possible reasons:

  1. Cluster resource utilization: Your ECS cluster may have had sufficient CPU resources available during the November 6 deployment, but by November 19, other tasks or services in the same cluster might be consuming more resources, leaving insufficient CPU for your new deployment.

  2. Auto Scaling group changes: If your ECS cluster uses EC2 instances in an Auto Scaling group, the number of instances might have decreased due to scaling policies, reducing the available CPU capacity.

  3. Background processes: Other processes or system tasks on your container instances might be consuming more CPU than before, leaving less available for your ECS tasks.

  4. Task definition mismatch: If there was an automatic update to your task definition that increased CPU requirements, this could cause the deployment to fail.

To resolve this issue, you can:

  • Monitor your ECS cluster resource capacity using Amazon CloudWatch metrics
  • Set up Container Insights for detailed task and container level resource usage metrics
  • Review your Auto Scaling group settings to ensure they align with your workload requirements
  • Check if there are any other tasks or services consuming more resources than expected
  • Consider increasing the CPU capacity of your cluster by adding more instances or using larger instance types

Even without changes to your infrastructure or code, resource availability can fluctuate based on the overall utilization of your cluster, which might explain why the deployment failed on November 19 despite succeeding earlier.
