Hello, I understand that a transit gateway can receive an advertised default route, but can it receive public prefixes that have been advertised over a direct connect?

Yes, public prefixes advertised from on on-prem connection over a Direct Connect transit VIF are treated the same way as private prefixes by the transit gateway.
