Clarification on Amazon QuickSight Billing and “Usage” Meaning for October 2025

0

Hello,

I noticed a charge related to my Amazon QuickSight account for October 2025 and would like some help understanding how these costs are calculated.

Here is my scenario:

IBILLING

I have only two accounts in the São Paulo (sa-east-1) region — my root account (leabr) and one Author Pro user (l.donato).

My total charge for the month was USD 415.28, and I would like clarification on the following points:

What does the “Usage” field mean in my billing report?

Why is the Amazon QuickSight SAE1-Amazon-Q-QS-Fee line item split into two separate charges?

For Amazon QuickSight SAE1-Author-Pro-Enterprise-Month, I see two different charges — one for USD 25.81 and another for USD 88.87. Could you please explain the difference between these two?

I also see two different usage values:

QuickSight Enterprise Edition Author Pro - South America (São Paulo) (sa-east-1): usage = 0.516

$40.00 per User for QuickSight Enterprise Edition Author Pro in South America (São Paulo) (sa-east-1): usage = 2.222

Could you please explain what these usage values represent and how they are calculated? I would also appreciate a detailed explanation of how AWS determines the total QuickSight billing process, including what each fee or usage metric means.

Thank you very much for your help, I’m not yet familiar with AWS billing, and I want to make sure I fully understand the charges.

Based on your billing details for Amazon QuickSight in October 2025, I can help clarify how these charges are calculated.

The "Usage" field in your billing report represents different metrics depending on the line item:

For Author Pro users, the usage value represents the number of user-months. A value like 0.516 or 2.222 indicates partial month usage, which is calculated on a prorated daily basis. For example, if you added an Author Pro user partway through the month, you would be charged only for the days that user was active.

For the Amazon Q enablement fee, the usage value likely represents the number of months the feature was enabled (typically 1.0 for a full month).

Regarding the split charges for Amazon QuickSight SAE1-Amazon-Q-QS-Fee, this could be due to:

  1. A price change that occurred during the billing period
  2. Partial month activation of Amazon Q features
  3. Different tiers or levels of Amazon Q usage during the month

For the Amazon QuickSight SAE1-Author-Pro-Enterprise-Month charges ($25.81 and $88.87), these differences likely reflect:

  1. Different time periods within the month when the Author Pro user was active
  2. Possible changes in the number of Author Pro users during the month
  3. Prorated charges based on when users were added or removed

The two different usage values you're seeing (0.516 and 2.222) for Author Pro users suggest that there might have been changes in your Author Pro user configuration during the month. When you add users, charges are prorated at a daily level for the month. However, when you delete users, you are typically billed for the whole month.

The Amazon Q enablement fee ($250 per month) is a fixed charge that applies to accounts with at least one Author Pro user, which explains part of your total charges. This fee is not optional when you have Author Pro users, as they have access to the generative BI capabilities provided by Amazon Q in QuickSight.

Your total charge of $415.28 appears to include the Amazon Q enablement fee plus the prorated charges for your Author Pro users.
