There are a few different options to consider for roaming profiles and documents in this scenario. Here are a few possibilities:

  1. Use AWS WorkSpaces: AWS WorkSpaces is a desktop-as-a-service solution that allows you to provision virtual desktops for your users. WorkSpaces includes built-in support for roaming profiles, so users can access their desktop and documents from any device. WorkSpaces is charged on a per-user, per-month basis, so you only pay for what you use.
  2. Use Amazon FSx for Windows File Server: Amazon FSx is a fully managed file storage service that supports the SMB protocol, which is used by Windows for file sharing. You can create an FSx file system and mount it as a network drive on your users' computers. FSx supports features such as Active Directory integration and file system quotas, and you can control access to the file system using AWS IAM. FSx is charged on a per-GB basis for storage and a per-IO basis for file operations.
  3. Use Amazon S3 with AWS Storage Gateway: You can use Amazon S3 to store your users' documents and configure AWS Storage Gateway to cache frequently accessed files on-premises. This setup allows users to access their documents from anywhere with an internet connection, while minimizing the amount of data that needs to be transferred over the VPN. S3 charges on a per-GB basis for storage, while Storage Gateway charges on a per-GB basis for cached data.

Ultimately, the best solution for your specific use case will depend on a variety of factors such as the number of users, the size of their profiles and documents, and their typical usage patterns. I recommend evaluating each of these options and choosing the one that best fits your needs and budget.
