Why do the metrics for my Lightsail instance keep disappearing?

0

For the last week or so I've been getting apparently spurious high CPU utilization alarms for my Lightsail instance. When I log into the management console and look at the CPU metrics, there's no data on CPU usage or Burst Capacity at all. Nothing - no data points shown. I can still log into my instance (it's Linux, FWIW) and it appears to be working fine and there's absolutely nothing going on. The top command shows load averages of 0.0 since forever.

Why does missing data trigger a high usage alarm? And more importantly, why is the data missing?

Hi,

Please verify the missing-data setting for your alarms. Here's some documentation that helps explain the available options and what they mean - https://docs.aws.amazon.com/lightsail/latest/userguide/amazon-lightsail-alarms.html#missing-data

Please let us know if the alarm behavior doesn't match what is expected from the documentation or if you'd like any further help.

Thanks.

  • Yes, thanks! That explains why I was getting CPU alarms for missing data. I still don't understand why there is missing data in the first place though. There are 8-10 hour gaps in the CPU data! That kind of makes the whole idea of alarms useless.
