Lightsail Instance Status Unkonwn - Stuck in stopping state

Our production instance is currently down. It Status: Unknown and a button to STOP. I clicked Stop and agreed to stopping the instance and when I refresh the page it still just shows the Stop button. I'm unable to create a snapshot since it's in the stopping phase. I can't connect to it via SSH.

"We have detected a degradation of the underlying hardware hosting your instance: Kappa_Delta_Phi_NAS (us-east-1) in your AWS Account with ID: 457434490356. Due to this degradation, we will have to perform necessary maintenance to the underlying hardware.
Maintenance activity will result in your Lightsail instance stopping after Tue, 25 Jun 2019 22:00:00 GMT. After your instance is stopped, you can restart it at any time."

It's not June 25th yet! Is this an unrelated issue? What can I do?

Minutes after posting this thread the server showed the button to Start server, about 43 minutes after clicking stop. Funny enough the History log has updated the "Stopped" timestamp to show only 3 minutes of down time...

  • I've seen this issue happen to my lightsail instances EVERY 6 months like clockwork for years now. It just hangs, instance failure and then get stuck on stopping for 40+ minutes. Maybe it's time to move on from Lightsail, just not reliable. AWS has no solution or comment on it.
