Elasticsearch 7.7.1 to OpenSearch 1.x Snapshot Compatibility

0

Hello,

I’m planning to migrate from a self-managed Elasticsearch cluster (version 7.7.1) to OpenSearch. I couldn’t find any official reference confirming whether snapshot and restore are compatible with OpenSearch 1.x.

Could you please clarify if this migration path is supported?

Thank you, Oron

Snapshot and restore from Elasticsearch 7.7.1 to OpenSearch 1.x is technically supported; however, it requires an intermediate upgrade. Specifically, the Elasticsearch cluster must first be upgraded to Open Distro for Elasticsearch 1.13 (built on Elasticsearch 7.10.2). Once this step is completed, a rolling or restart upgrade to OpenSearch 1.x can be performed.

Recommend upgrade path:

Elasticsearch 7.7.1 → Open Distro 1.13 Open Distro 1.13 → OpenSearch 1.x

Hey,

Hope you're keeping well.

Snapshots taken from Elasticsearch 7.7.1 are not directly compatible with OpenSearch 1.x because OpenSearch supports snapshot restore only from Elasticsearch 7.10 or later. The recommended path is to first upgrade your self-managed cluster to Elasticsearch 7.10.2 (or Open Distro for Elasticsearch 1.13, which is based on 7.10.2), create a snapshot, and then restore it into OpenSearch 1.x. This ensures metadata and index formats are aligned and avoids restore failures. You can find AWS’s documented migration guidance here: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/opensearch-service/latest/developerguide/migration.html.

Thanks and regards,
Taz
