What's the meaning of the DeviceState "RegisteredUnreachable" when getting sidewalk wireless device statistics through AWS CLi?

Hi all,

There are no descriptions about the meaning of all kinds of Devicestates for sidewalk wireless device, which can be acquired through AWS CLI get-wireless-device-statistics and can be found in the SidewalkDeviceMetadata.

The meaning of "Provisioned"、"RegisteredNotSeen" and "RegisteredReachable" are quite clear literally, however, "RegisteredUnreachable" is not. May I ask what's the machanism making the DeviceState of a Sidewalk wireless deivce become "RegisteredUnreachable" after join the AWS Sidewalk? For example, how long if the device didn't send a uplink to sidewalk or how many acknowledge didn't received by sidewalk will the DeviceState being changed in Sidewalk?

More specifically, if a class A sidewalk device only sned unconfirm uplink, then how long after it is outside the coverage or how many ackonwledgement sidewalk didn't received from that device will the DeviceState being changed by Sidewalk?

When getting Sidewalk wireless device statistics through AWS CLI, the DeviceState "RegisteredUnreachable" indicates that the device has been registered with AWS IoT Wireless, but it is currently not reachable or cannot communicate with the network.

The DeviceState property in the SidewalkDeviceMetadata provides information about the current status of a Sidewalk device. Here's what the different states mean:

  1. Provisioned: The device has been set up in AWS IoT Wireless but hasn't yet connected to the network.
  2. RegisteredNotSeen: The device has been registered but hasn't been detected on the network yet.
  3. RegisteredReachable: The device is registered and currently able to communicate with the network.
  4. RegisteredUnreachable: The device is registered but is currently unable to communicate with the network.

The "RegisteredUnreachable" state occurs when a device that was previously connected and communicating (RegisteredReachable) becomes unreachable. This could happen due to various reasons, such as:

  1. The device has moved out of network coverage.
  2. There are interference issues affecting the device's ability to communicate.
  3. The device has powered down or entered a low-power state.
  4. There might be a hardware or software issue with the device.

The mechanism that changes a device's state to "RegisteredUnreachable" is typically based on the network's inability to communicate with the device for a certain period. If the AWS IoT Wireless service doesn't receive any messages or acknowledgments from the device within an expected timeframe, it may change the device's state to "RegisteredUnreachable".

It's important to note that this state is dynamic and can change. If the device becomes reachable again, its state should update to "RegisteredReachable".

  • What's the "expected timeframe" means specifically? For example, how long if the Sidewalk didn't receive UL from device or how many acknowledgement the Sidewalk didn't received from the device making the DeviceState being changed by Sidewalk?
