Questions on RDS MySQL 5.7, Aurora MySQL 5.7 and EC2 OS Linux AMI reached the end of support

0

Hi, I would like to know what will happen when RDS MySQL 5.7, Aurora MySQL 5.7 and EC2 Linux AMI reached the end of support. I am aware that RDS MySQL 5.7 and EC2 Linux AMI end of support is on December 2023. I have some questions below.

  1. Is it possible to continue using the current version without upgrading?
  2. Is it possible create new database (RDS MySQL 5.7) or EC2 (Linux AMI) or restore from an old image AMI?
  3. What if the repositories do not support the version (Linux AMI) anymore, is it possible to use third party repositories? Are there any alternative solution?

Note: I am aware of the end of support and automatic upgrade for MySQL and has gone through AWS FAQS and documentations. But I have further questions would like to clarify, please refer to below.

For example, I have an EC2 instance running Linux AMI call server A. Linux AMI end of support date is on 31st December 2023.

  1. Server A has not been migrate or upgrade to newer OS version by me. What will happen to server A on 1st January 2024, will my server A still be able to keep running or will AWS shutdown my server A or AWS force upgrade my server A OS during maintenance schedule, if so how will AWS force upgrade the OS?

  2. When AWS end of support for Linux AMI on 31st December 2023, what does it mean? Does it mean that AWS do not provide support but I can still continue using the OS? Does it mean that I can still launch new EC2 instance with Linux AMI OS using an old AMI (even though I am aware that it is not recommended lacking in terms of security and other benefits).

Hi Mike,

Thank you for the quick response. However, I have further questions that I would like to clarify regarding to EC2.

  • This is related to Shared Responsibility Model. AWS is responsible for security of the cloud, i.e. hardware, hypervisor, networking. As the customer, you are responsible for security in the cloud, i.e. you are responsible for the OS and software in the EC2 instance. Refer to https://aws.amazon.com/compliance/shared-responsibility-model for details. Hope this clarifies.

For RDS, you can refer to RDS FAQ, What happens when an Amazon RDS DB engine version is deprecated? The timeline for RDS deprecation is documented here

For MySQL on EC2, this is not managed by AWS. Similarly, third party MySQL repositories are not managed by AWS.
