Cross-region architecture for IoT

0

Hi! We have multiple services running in stockholm region and are ramping up an IoT project now. IoT core and device management are available in stockholm region but IoT Analytics and IoT events are not. The nearest is Ireland.

Which considerations should I take to decide on the service architecture here? I could host Core and Device management in north and have analytics and events in west but I'm a bit worried about latency and the amount of data.

Having everything IoT in west could work, but as the devices will transmit location data to Location services multiple times every hour, that too will amout to lots of data, which again should be accessible via apps and webpages.

Are the latency or cost a big addon when doing cross-region integrations, and is there a way to limit this? My idea was to send data from an IoT topic to analytics via Kinesis...

When considering your IoT architecture across multiple AWS regions, you must balance latency, data transfer costs, and service availability

To decide your IoT service architecture across AWS regions: The factors to consider

Keep IoT Core and Device Management in Stockholm for low-latency device communication. Use Ireland for IoT Analytics and IoT Events, as they aren't available in Stockholm. Minimize cross-region latency (~20-50 ms) and data transfer costs ($0.02-$0.09 per GB). Recommended Setup:

Hybrid Approach: Process real-time device interactions in Stockholm. Forward necessary data to Ireland using Kinesis or S3 for analytics and events. Cache or preprocess data locally in Stockholm for apps and webpages to reduce latency and costs.

Optimize Costs and Latency:

Filter and aggregate data in Stockholm to reduce transfer volumes. Transfer non-critical data asynchronously (e.g., in batches). Partition workloads: low-latency tasks in Stockholm, analytics-heavy tasks in Ireland.

This balances latency, cost, and performance effectively for your IoT project

  • Thanks! The Hybrid approach looks like the best solution!

As well as the above answer you need to take into account data residency location from a legal point of view.
