Can I roll Athena back to version 2?

0

Before I upgrade Athena to version 3, I'd like to know if I can roll it back to version 2 afterwards.

If I can roll it back, then I can test in my main dev environment. If I cannot roll Athena back to version 2, then I need a new environment to test the upgrade.

(I didn't find this question after searching on athena rollback, athena upgrade, or athena version)

Thanks!

Hi Rebecca,

according to this you can specify engine version per workgroup and switch it:

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/athena/latest/ug/engine-versions-changing.html

Hope it helps and if it does, I would appreciate if answer can be accepted so that community can benefit for clarity when searching for similar enquires in repost, thank you ;)

  • Ah, you reminded me of the Athena workspaces, and I can create a new workspace for testing version 3. I can test my queries to the version 3 workspace, and when I have them working, point my application at the version 3 workspace, just to be sure. This option will work well for my scenario.

The documentation you referenced doesn't talk about changing a workspace to a lower version, but because I can test version 3 in a new workspace, being able to go down to a lower version is no longer important.

    Thanks!
