Data migration using Datasync

0

We have multiple application(AWS account) that needs database migration from on premise data center to AWS. we are looking for using Datasync service. Setup - Datasync agent and datasync endpoint in a single AWS account and then source would be on-premise data center and destination would be S3 bucket. Can we use common datasync agent for multiple task that migrate data to different accounts.

AWS DataSync is a useful tool for migrating files and unstructured data to AWS, but it's not the preferred choice for database migrations. Another commonly used AWS service specifically designed for database migrations is AWS Database Migration Service (AWS DMS). You can also use a common AWS DataSync agent for multiple tasks that migrate unstructured data to different AWS accounts in combination with DMS.

AWS DMS allows you to migrate databases to AWS from on-premises or other cloud environments. It supports a wide range of database sources and targets, including Amazon RDS, Amazon Redshift, Amazon S3, and others. AWS DMS can perform both homogeneous migrations (e.g., Oracle to Oracle) and heterogeneous migrations (e.g., Oracle to Amazon Aurora).

Using AWS DataSync:

  • You can use AWS DataSync to migrate data files, such as log files or backup files, from your on-premises environment to AWS storage services like Amazon S3.
  • This can be useful for setting up a data lake or for archiving data in AWS.

Using AWS DMS:

  • AWS DMS is specifically designed for database migrations, allowing you to migrate your entire database or just specific tables.
  • It can perform continuous data replication, which is useful for migrating databases with minimal downtime.
  • AWS DMS supports a wide range of database engines, making it a flexible solution for heterogeneous migrations.

Depending on your specific requirements, you may find that using a combination of AWS DataSync and AWS DMS is the most effective approach for migrating your data to AWS.

Yes, you can use a common AWS DataSync agent for multiple tasks that migrate data to different AWS accounts. This setup can be an efficient way to manage data migration from your on-premises data center to multiple AWS accounts. Here's how you can approach this scenario:

  1. Deploy a single DataSync agent in your on-premises environment. This agent will serve as the common point for all your migration tasks.

  2. Activate the DataSync agent in a single AWS account. This account will be your source account where you'll manage the DataSync resources.

  3. In the source account, create multiple DataSync tasks. Each task will represent a migration job to a specific destination S3 bucket in a different AWS account.

  4. For each task, you'll need to:

    • Create a source location pointing to your on-premises storage.
    • Create a destination location pointing to the S3 bucket in the target AWS account.
    • Set up the necessary IAM roles and permissions to allow DataSync in the source account to access the S3 buckets in the destination accounts.
  5. Update the S3 bucket policies in each destination account to allow access from the DataSync IAM role in the source account.

This approach allows you to centralize your DataSync management in one account while still being able to transfer data to multiple destination accounts. It's an efficient use of resources as you don't need to deploy and manage multiple DataSync agents.

However, keep in mind that while this setup is possible and can be more manageable, you should consider the following:

  • Ensure that the single DataSync agent can handle the combined workload of all your migration tasks.
  • Be mindful of network bandwidth limitations, as all transfers will be going through the same agent.
  • Carefully manage the IAM roles and permissions to maintain proper security and access control across accounts.

By following this approach, you can use a common DataSync agent for multiple tasks migrating data from your on-premises data center to S3 buckets in different AWS accounts.
