ERROR [ssm-agent-worker] [MessagingDeliveryService] error when calling AWS APIs. error details - GetMessages Error: EC2RoleRequestError: no EC2 instance role found

I'm starting to get the following errors in the aws-ssm-agent.log file. The errors seem to happen and last for 10-15 minutes, during which time my application stops working and I get the error message "Unable to reach credentials server". It's using an instance role so when this happens no aws service on this server works.
