Buy a savings plan for an Organizational Unit, with consolidated billing configured for root Organizational account

0

We have an Organization, with Consolidated Billing resulting in a single bill to the Root, payer account.

We would like to buy a savings plan for an Organization Unit, a child node of this Organization, which itself contains several accounts.

How can we do this?

Hi there!

In this case, buy the savings plan from an account in the OU that will be the closest to the workload that you want it applied to. Then the priority of the SP will take care of the rest: it will be applied first to resources in that account, then to other accounts in the same OU, and if still available, other accounts in the org up to the commitment you purchased.

I hope this helps.

  • Hi there! If this was helpful, please accept the answer. Thank you!

  • Per AWS conference-vids / trainings, we are usually informed that Savings Plans discounts based on Linked-Account sharing, are shared based on the following two priorities: 1) The account that purchased the SP; 2) Other accounts in the sharing-group, based on whichever account has EC2 resources with the best available SP-discount . On the other hand, I've never heard of the OU being part of the linked-account sharing model, though I might have missed it. Do you have a documentation/reference for this?

Create a shared pool account as a Savings Plan account, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to the AWS Management Console using the management account credentials.
  2. Go to the Billing and Cost Management console.
  3. Navigate to the "Preferences" page within the Billing and Cost Management console.
  4. Look for the option to enable RI/Savings Plan sharing. This setting allows you to share Reserved Instances (RI) and Savings Plans across accounts.
  5. Enable the RI/Savings Plan sharing option.
  6. Specify the particular account ID or multiple child accounts that you want to include in the shared pool account.
  7. Save the changes to apply the sharing settings.

By enabling RI/Savings Plan sharing and specifying the account ID(s) to include, you are allowing the specified account(s) to purchase and utilize Reserved Instances and Savings Plans from the shared pool account. This helps in centralizing the management and utilization of RIs and Savings Plans within the designated accounts.

Please note that the exact steps and options may vary slightly depending on the AWS account structure and the version of the AWS Management Console. It's always recommended to refer to the official AWS documentation or contact AWS Support for specific guidance related to your account setup.

  • This lets us narrow down sharing to a subset of our accounts. AFAICT it would mean we could only share a savings plan across that subset. It doesn't offer us a way to create, for instance, pool-0 for one savings plan, and pool-1 for another. We want to enabled savings plan sharing across accounts other than this subset. Am I missing something that would allow us to having one savings plan for one OU and its child accounts, and another savings plan for OUs/accounts not in that set?

    We want:

    Org > OU1 > [ account1, account2] > savings-plan1 Org > !OU1 > savings-plan2 (in other words Org > OU[2-N] > savings-plan2)
