If your Amazon Q Chat in Visual Studio is stuck on "Q chat is starting up" and never completes initialization, here are several troubleshooting steps you can try:
-
Network connectivity issues could be causing the problem. Even though your internet connection appears stable, there might be specific connectivity issues between the extension and Amazon Q services. Check if there are any firewall settings blocking the connection.
-
Try signing out of Amazon Q in the IDE and signing back in again, especially if you recently switched between Free and Pro tiers.
-
If you're using Amazon Q Developer Pro, be aware that after adding your username to a group, it can take up to 24 hours for your subscription to become fully active.
-
Try using the "/quit" command to exit and restart the Amazon Q chat if possible.
-
Check the Amazon Q logs for specific error messages:
- Look for patterns like "Connection timeout" or "Network unreachable" in the logs
- These logs can help identify if there are authentication issues, network connectivity problems, or feature-specific errors
-
If you're using IAM Identity Center authentication, ensure you're signing in to the application in the same AWS Region where your IAM Identity Center instance is located.
-
Verify that your access to Amazon Q Developer (Free or Pro) hasn't been revoked or deleted.
-
If the issue persists after 24 hours, you may need to contact AWS support for further assistance.

I did try everything suggested, but to no avail. However, on logging on today, I can now reach Q Developer chat again!
Cloudflare was down yesterday, which might well have been the cause.
