Amazon Workspaces billing explanations

0

Hello,

I’m testing Amazon WorkSpaces with a Simple AD via an AD Connector. 2 or 3 times, I completely deleted and recreated all resources (WorkSpaces, Simple AD, directory, etc.), using the same domain name and recreating the AD users.

Here’s my billing breakdown:

EU (Ireland)

DescriptionUsage QuantityAmount (USD)
Amazon WorkSpaces EU-AW-HWU-3-1-AutoStop-User
- $11/Month-Performance-1-Ubuntu-2vCPU,8 GB Memory - Root:80 GB,User:50 GB2.627 Month28.89
Amazon WorkSpaces EU-AW-HWU-3-AutoStop-Usage
- $0.5/hour-Performance-Ubuntu-2vCPU,8 GB Memory9 hours4.50
Amazon WorkSpaces EU-AW-SWU-3
- $0/month for Performance bundle (Software) in EU (Ireland) Region2.627 Month0.00

Everything looks correct except the first category, which is the cost per WorkSpace per month. The hourly costs are in the second category. I stopped testing 2-3 days ago, so billing should be stable now.

Question 1
The charge should be $11, $22, $33…, but I see $28.89, corresponding to 2.627 months of usage. How did I reach 2.627 months in just a few days? Shouldn’t it be a whole number (e.g., “2” for two WorkSpaces, costing $22)?

Question 2
How does billing work when I delete and recreate a personal WorkSpace with the exact same configuration?
During my tests, I deployed a maximum of two Personal WorkSpaces at the same time, for two different AD accounts. My charges exceed $22.
According to this AWS re:Post questions, WorkSpaces treats users as different entities if they belong to different directories or ADs, even if the AD username (e.g., “bancelin”) is the same due to a different SID. There is NO such informations in the Amazon WorkSpaces Pricing page and in the Amazon WorkSpaces FAQ. Someone can confirm?

Thank you Brandon

To address your questions about Amazon WorkSpaces billing:

  1. The 2.627 months of usage you're seeing is likely due to the way AWS bills for WorkSpaces. Even when you delete and recreate WorkSpaces, you're still charged for the full month for each WorkSpace created. This is because the monthly fee for WorkSpaces is not prorated. So, if you created multiple WorkSpaces during your testing period, even if they were deleted shortly after, each one would incur a full month's charge. This explains why your total exceeds what you'd expect for just two WorkSpaces.

  2. Regarding billing when deleting and recreating WorkSpaces:

    • Each time you create a new WorkSpace, even if it's for the same user and with the same configuration, it's treated as a new instance for billing purposes.
    • The monthly fee is charged in full for each WorkSpace created, regardless of how long it exists within that month.
    • You are correct that WorkSpaces treats users as different entities if they belong to different directories or ADs, even if the username is the same. This is due to the unique Security Identifier (SID) associated with each user in different directories.
    • While this information isn't explicitly stated in the main pricing page or FAQ, it is consistent with how AWS typically handles resource creation and billing.

To minimize costs in the future when testing, consider:

  • Planning your testing to align with billing cycles
  • Using the same directory and users when possible to avoid creating new billable instances
  • Utilizing the hourly billing option for short-term testing scenarios

Remember, the AutoStop feature helps reduce hourly charges when WorkSpaces are not in use, but it doesn't affect the monthly infrastructure fee.

  • Thank you for your answer Rick,

You said I’m charged for the full month for each WorkSpace created, which I totally understand as mentioned on the pricing page.
That’s why I’m still wondering: Why am I charged for 2.6 WorkSpaces instead of 3?
If I’m billed for the full month per WorkSpace, shouldn’t the total be $33 instead of $28.89?
