I'm looking to setup a Direct Connect in Equinix Adelaide (AE1) - any recommendations or traps to avoid?

AE1 does not have Equinix Fabric so you will need to leverage another Direct Connect (DX) Partner. This page details options including speeds and locations (scroll/search for 'AWS Direct Connect Partners by AWS Direct Connect Location'). Ideally the Partner has a presence in AE1 to simplify the cross-connect.

You might want to consider terminating in Melbourne (NEXTDC M1) with a view to leveraging the new region when it comes online (ADL-MEL ~10ms, ADL-SYD ~20ms). ADL-MEL DX then on to SYD via AWS backbone may have slightly higher latency which is something to consider, but it may be cheaper as it's a physically shorter path for the carrier. Some Partners offer elastic bandwidth (manual or programatic) if you have variable throughput requirements which is another way to manage cost.
