Update DNS - domain owner help pls

0

Hi - A couple of years ago someone in my company (now left) set up a website with Go Daddy. I've has emails asking me to Update DNS to keep your site up - I called them and they said I had to speak to gandi.net as they registered the domain name ? No one knows anything about this as the guy who did website sadi he did it all with Go Daddy. I contacted gandi and they now tell me this - is in fact registered at Gandi, its management has been delegated to AMAZON WEB SERVICES (AWS), a Gandi reseller. I have no clue as to what this means and I don't have an account linked to this website with AWS HELP as our website will go down today if I don't update the DNS (I don't really understand what this even means either TBF)

  • What is your domain name ? You can identify the Registrar of record for any Registered Name by performing a WHOIS query : https://registrar.amazon.com/whois If it's registered with Amazon Registrar, you can also view the contact information for the owner and for the administrative and technical contacts.

Hello,

Your question covers several topics that are all related to DNS and domain name management, so let me try and break this down.

Based on the description, i think that you have confused registering a domain and pointing it at a DNS server. Based on your problem description, i believe that your co-worker likely registered the domain at go daddy, and at some point might have transfered it to gandi.net. So at this point the domain is likely either owned by godaddy, or gandi. Assuming that Gandi.net is correct, it's likely the ownership is there. Next is what DNS servers the domain is pointed at. Based on what I am reading above it sounds like the authoritative name servers are configured to point at route53. Likely that's what Gandi meant by this statement "is in fact registered at Gandi, its management has been delegated to AMAZON WEB SERVICES (AWS),"

This is a configuration that would be setup at either godaddy or gandi and will list 4 different nameservers in the format of ns-1234.awsdns-123.com (.net, .org, and .co.uk). Its this configuration at your registrar that allows DNS to work.

To confirm this, you can login to your AWS account and goto route53 to find the zone listed there. Once you have found where that zone is hosted in route53, you would be able to make the changes necessary there. If this does not completely help out, please let me know where there is any confusion. Thank you!

Hello & thank you for such a comprehensive reply :) since posting I have discovered more about this but I am now completely stuck as I have no idea who registered the account with AWS (as no one knew it has been moved from go daddy to Gandi) and therefore don’t what email was used so I am unable to login and check anything :( It’s a nightmare that just seems to go round in circles …
