Lightsail instance high cpu consumption

0

Hello,

We have opened this question due to an issue with a Lightsail instance (Windows Server). We have seen a high consumption of cpu at the same hour. It's always at night, sometimes around 4:00 AM and sometimes around 5:00 AM (Spain (CET), UTC +1).

We configured an alarm (via email) when cpu utilization is greater than or equal to 40% for 2 times within the last 20 minutes, and we receive 2 emails everyday: one to notify when cpu utilization is greater than or equal to 40%, and other email (15-20 mins after first notification) to notify that de cpu utilization is OK again (under 40% ). In the screenshots you can see that it barely has cpu use outside of those hours. Here is the information that provided on emails:

Monitored Details:

  • MonitoredResourceType: Lightsail/Instance
  • MonitoredResourceName: [Name of instance]
  • ComparisonOperator: GreaterThanOrEqualToThreshold
  • Threshold: 40.0 Percent
  • MetricName: CPUUtilization
  • Period: 300 Seconds
  • Statistic: AVERAGE

We have tried with Performance Monitor, to identify any processes that they may be having that consumption, following the steps in this link (section "Use Performance Monitor to identify the source of high CPU utilization"), but the report doesn't show any high consumption -> https://aws.amazon.com/premiumsupport/knowledge-center/ec2-cpu-utilization-not-throttled/

Could you help us with this? If it is necessary to provide more information, we will gladly do so.

Thanks in advance. Regards

  • Hi Gistek,

Based on your updated metrics, it seems like the peak consumption dropped Nov 20 and onward. Is this issue is still occurring?

Hi there,

If you're still seeing issues related to high CPU utilization, please take a look into this documentation:

All the best, Steven

Hello Steven,

Thanks for the response, but it doesn't resolve our issue. We have already provided screenshots of the metrics precisely because they show the same peak of consumption at the same hour. We attach them again -> Metrics screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/oeGXF8F

Thanks again for the response, all help is appreciated.

Hello,

Sorry for the delay in updating the case. Finally, we detect that the high consumption was due to a Windows Defender scheduled scan task in the task scheduler.

In case it is useful for anyone to consider. Thank you.
