When the "Free Tier" indicator disappears from your AWS console, it doesn't necessarily mean you've lost your Free Tier eligibility. This could happen for several reasons:
-
You might have accidentally joined an AWS Organization as a member account. In Organizations, Free Tier benefits are applied at the organization level, not individually to member accounts.
-
You could be logged in as an IAM user rather than the root account. IAM users sometimes don't see the "Free Tier eligible" badges even when the account still has Free Tier benefits.
-
You might be trying to create resources in a region where Free Tier isn't available, or selecting instance types that aren't Free Tier eligible (only t2.micro or t3.micro in certain regions qualify).
-
Your 12-month Free Tier period may have expired if your account is older than a year.
Unfortunately, there isn't a way to "block" or restrict yourself to only Free Tier resources. AWS doesn't provide a mechanism to make only Free Tier instance types clickable or to prevent selection of larger instances like t3.large.
To manage your Free Tier usage:
- Check your Free Tier status in the Billing dashboard
- Set up AWS Budgets or Free Tier usage alerts to notify you when approaching limits
- Be careful to manually select only Free Tier eligible resources (t2.micro or t3.micro)
- Monitor your usage regularly to avoid unexpected charges
If you're concerned about accidentally launching non-Free Tier resources, you could consider setting up IAM policies that restrict the creation of specific instance types, but this requires advanced configuration and isn't a built-in "Free Tier only" mode.
