Create an accurate Macie estimate

30-Day Free Trial Advantage:

When you first enable Amazon Macie, it includes a 30-day free trial of S3 bucket inventory and sensitive data discovery. During this period, Macie provides a cost estimate dashboard that is far more accurate than any manual calculation.

How to find the most accurate estimate:

• Enable Macie: Once enabled, Macie automatically evaluates all your S3 buckets.
• Wait 24-48 hours: Macie needs a moment to scan your bucket metadata.
• Check the "Usage" Page: In the Macie console, go to Usage in the left navigation pane.
• Review the Estimated Monthly Cost: This page will show you exactly what your spend would be based on your actual data volume and object types.

"Key Optimization Tip":

Before running full discovery jobs, use the "Automated sensitive data discovery" feature (if available in your region). It samples a small subset of your data to give you a "heat map" of where sensitive data resides, allowing you to target your paid discovery jobs much more cost-effectively.

During Job Creation: When creating a sensitive data discovery job, Macie automatically calculates and displays estimated costs at two key points:

• When you review the table of S3 buckets you've selected (step 2)
• When you review all job settings before saving (step 8)

Improving Estimate Accuracy: To make your estimates more accurate, consider these factors:

1. Adjust Compression Ratio: By default, Macie assumes a 3:1 compression ratio for compressed and archive files, which can result in higher cost estimates. You can recalculate the estimate using a different compression ratio by selecting from the "Choose an estimated compression ratio" list in the Estimated cost section.

2. Review Bucket-Level Estimates: During job creation, Macie shows estimated costs for individual buckets, helping you understand the cost of analyzing specific data sources.

3. Consider Only Classifiable Objects: Macie only includes objects that use supported Amazon S3 storage classes and have file name extensions for supported file or storage formats in its estimates.

Monitoring Costs: You can monitor estimated costs on the Usage page of the Amazon Macie console, which shows estimated costs for the current AWS Region during the current calendar month. For actual costs and more detailed tracking, use AWS Billing and Cost Management, which provides features to track, analyze, and forecast usage costs based on historical data.
