Free Tier And Aws Organizations. Is free tier consolidated or only for first aws account under organization?

0

Hi, I have two questions with respect to AWS organizations and free tier.

  1. Suppose I have created a free tier account and created aws organization in it. If I add a new member account in organization how is the free tier applied? As per https://aws.amazon.com/free/free-tier-faqs/ FAQs we have one free tier Per Organization. But it does not mentions whether the free tier is account specific or the resources counted under free tier usage can be under any account in Organization or only applies to the single parent AWS Account.
  2. What happens when I invite a account for which free tier is already exhausted to an organization which is experiencing free tier benefits. Will the free tier on organization account be stopped due to inviting free tier exhausted account. Moreover if in 1, we can have a consolidated free tier, then if I use free tier resource in free tier exhausted account, will I be able to get free tier benefits in such scenario?

Free Tier is eligible only for one account, even within organization. I'll try to explain it by an example as:

Suppose I have three accounts in an organization:

  1. Account A Free Tier
  2. Account B
  3. Account C

I ran 500/750 EC2 free tier hours in Account A, 200 hours EC2 in Account B and 100 hours EC2 Account C. Organization would see the consolidated billing of these three accounts with 50(500+200+100-750) EC2 hours charge instead of 300 hours.

Also, take a look at Consolidated Billing for AWS Organizations

PS: On your question, I did little more research within our resources internally and here is some additional details for more clarity:

FT usage is aggregated across all accounts in the CB family. The payer is the only account that can view the usage on the FT page in Billing Console. If the CB family is currently within 12 months FT and a newer account joins, that new account will continue to enjoy FT but it will have to share the FT usage with all other accounts.

CB: Consolidated Billing FT: Free Tier

I hope this answers to both questions, feel free to comment here if you have any additional questions.

  • Suppose, If I have 3 different free tier accounts and decided to combine them by using aws organization then how the free tier will apply on that organization of 3 combined free tier accounts?. And also I have running an ec2 instances on all the 3 accounts with 750 hours individually. For that case how this apply?

The free tier is shared among the organization's accounts.

For AWS Organizations, the AWS Free Tier eligibility for all member accounts begins on the day that the management account is created. For more information, see the AWS Organizations User Guide.

https://aws.amazon.com/free/free-tier-faqs/?nc1=h_ls

To calculate the Organization’s use of AWS Services under any Offers, we will aggregate the usage across all accounts in the Organization. You will be charged standard rates for use of AWS Services if we determine that you are not eligible for the Free Tier or have exceeded the limits for a particular service.

If the organization has any free tier remaining, those free tier will be used.
