DataZone empty PUB database in Athena

When opening Athena from DataZone portal project I can see no tables in the database with the _pub_db suffix. I expected to see them. Steps I took:

  1. create a data source in AWS DataZone console (from Glue catalog that was created in Lake Formation)
  2. in DataZone portal, being in correct project "publish data" button -> "automated publish" -> select correct data source -> data asset publishing: draft -> create publishing job I can see all the tables in project -> publishing -> published data. Also, if I make any of the data assets active and subscribe to it, from the same project, then the table appears in Athena '_sub_db' database and I can query it.

Is this behavior expected?

Yes, that is an expected behavior, you need to subscribe to the data assets that you published in order to consume them. so in that case you are going to see in the _sub_db
