My Directory Services Restarted Automatically AFTER they were deleted!!!

Using your own AI system and having it review the billing and data usage this is what it determine:

This is very revealing! The billing history shows that:

What Actually Happened:
April-June 2026: Directory Service charges were $0 - your previous deletion worked!
July 2, 2026: Directory Service charges resumed - something recreated the directory!
The Real Problem:
Something is automatically recreating your AWS Directory Service after you delete it. This explains why you had to go through the deletion process before and why you're having to do it again.

Possible causes:

Amazon WorkSpaces (which has been charging you $13/month consistently) might be automatically recreating the directory
CloudFormation stack or AWS Config might be recreating resources
Another AWS service has a dependency that's recreating the directory

However, it also verified there were no WorkSpaces, any Stacks, nor any other auto configurations or automations set up to re-establish this issue. I am being charged for something I already confirmed and deleted. I have since deleted the Directory once again. And again... verified it was deleted!

I understand your frustration with being charged for a service you've already deleted. Let me clarify what happens when AWS Directory Service directories are deleted and address your concerns.

When any AWS Directory Service directory (Simple AD, AWS Managed Microsoft AD, or AD Connector) is deleted, all directory data and snapshots are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. The directory itself does not automatically restart or recreate on its own—AWS does not have any built-in mechanism that would cause a deleted directory to spontaneously recreate itself.

However, there are important points to consider:

**Before deletion**, you must disable all AWS applications that are enabled for that directory. If applications remain enabled when you attempt to delete a directory, this could prevent proper deletion or cause unexpected behavior. Common applications that need to be disabled include Amazon WorkSpaces, Amazon WorkDocs, Amazon WorkMail, AWS IAM Identity Center, and others.

**Regarding your billing**: If you're seeing charges resume after a period of $0 charges, this suggests either:
- A new directory was created (intentionally or through automation you may not be aware of)
- There are other AWS services or configurations triggering directory creation
- The original directory wasn't fully deleted due to enabled applications

**To resolve this**:
1. Before deleting the directory again, carefully verify that ALL AWS applications are disabled for that directory
2. Check your AWS Support Center (https://console.aws.amazon.com/support/) to add correspondence about the unexpected charges
3. Review your AWS Support plan options if you need faster assistance with billing concerns

The directory itself cannot restart after confirmed deletion—something else would need to trigger its recreation.
