EC2 INSTANCE SET UP

0

Hi,

Can someone please suggest some low cost EC2 windows instance that runs on a 32vCPU and 64GB/128 memory. The instance should be ideal for running virtualisation related workload and the cost should not exceed $1.20 an hour . I am in the process of spinning up a windows EC2 instance to deploy a virtualised environment to practice my ccnp data centre lab tutorials ,two applications would be further installed to complete the set up

  1. Eve-NG
  2. Vmware workstation Would appreciate any feedback

Regards

Go to https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing/on-demand/ and select Northern Virginia as the region, and 32 for vCPUs.

If the instance must be running Windows then you're out of luck. If you can somehow make use of Linux then you are able to get a c6g.8xlarge for $1.088 per hour, or a c7g.8xlarge for $1.16 per hour, both of these are 32 vCPU and 64GB memory. These are the only two instance that are suitably specced and within budget. Prices are before tax, and don't include any storage.

The c7g is build around Arm-based AWS Graviton3 processors, whereas c6g uses Graviton 2. You weill know whether this is worth an extra 7 cents per hour to you.

Northern Virginia and Ohio tend to be the cheapest regions for any resources, but there is no harm in searching other regions.

If the instance must be running Windows then as @Kallu has already said these start at more than double what you are willing to pay. You may be able to get closer to your price point if you purchase one-year or three-year Reserved Instances, depending on how well that fits with your CCNP study plans https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing/reserved-instances/ (bear in mind these prices are best for an always-on system, so if you intend to stop your instance when you're not using it for study then RIs are probably going to work out more expensive in the long run).

I don't think you will be able to run VMware workstation on any of these, if you want an instance that will host a virtual machine there is more information about running Hyper-V on EC2 here https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/compute/running-hyper-v-on-amazon-ec2-bare-metal-instances/ but this is going to be way outside the budget you have set yousrself.

Unfortunately nothing can meet your specs. Instances with Windows, 32 vcpus and 64GB of memory start from above 2.5$/h. And these are VMs already so don't thing they are suited for your VMware deployment. So you should be looking at "bare metal" instance types. Cheapest bare metal instances with Windows start at +6$/h.

If you want rething your options here is a great tool for searching the EC2 instance pricelist https://instances.vantage.sh/

You can also get VMware as service from AWS but this is way off the price point you are looking for. https://aws.amazon.com/vmware/
