Failure to activate Storage Gateway Appliance

0

I am unable to activate a previously activated, then removed, Storage Gateway Appliance.

The appliance was activated at one point but I was not able to create a Gateway and out of frustration, removed the appliance from the Storage Gateway console. Now, when attempting to activate it once more in the wizard, the process of connecting to the hardware appliance results in the browser being unable to connect on port 8080.

I have very limited options at the Appliance's console, I can only Configure Network, Open Service Console, which errors with 'No guest consoles found!', Change Password & Logout.

I am attempting to activate the Appliance from a PC on the same subnet.

I have a second Storage Gateway Appliance activated and working properly currently.

Many thanks

If the appliance was previously activated, it will need to be reset by AWS Support before it can be re-activated. Please reach out to AWS Support and file a ticket asking for the appliance to be reset. You will be asked to open a support channel and provide the appliance serial number.

I understand your frustration with the Storage Gateway Appliance activation issue. Let's go through some troubleshooting steps to resolve this problem:

  1. Network Configuration: Ensure that your browser is on the same network as the hardware appliance. This is a crucial requirement for activation.

  2. Firewall Settings: Check that your firewall allows HTTP access on port 8080 to the appliance for inbound traffic. This port is specifically required for the activation process.

  3. IP Address: Verify that you're using the correct IP address for the appliance. Since you've previously activated it, the IP address might have changed if DHCP is used. You may need to reconfigure the network settings on the appliance.

  4. Browser Cache: Try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser to rule out any browser-related issues.

  5. Reset the Appliance: Since you have limited options at the appliance's console, you might need to perform a factory reset of the appliance. This should return it to its original state, allowing you to start the activation process from scratch. Consult the AWS documentation or contact AWS Support for guidance on how to perform a factory reset on your specific model.

  6. Time Synchronization: Ensure that the appliance's time is correctly synchronized. Incorrect time settings can cause activation failures.

  7. Network Connectivity: Verify that the appliance has proper network connectivity to reach AWS services. You can test this by trying to ping a known AWS endpoint from another device on the same network.

If these steps don't resolve the issue, you may need to contact AWS Support for further assistance. They can provide more detailed troubleshooting specific to your appliance and network configuration.

Remember, for activation, it's critical that your browser is on the same network as the appliance and that port 8080 is open for inbound HTTP traffic to the appliance. Double-check these requirements as they are often the cause of activation issues.
