Why NLB needs to be internet-facing?

NLB can be internal facing too.

However, there are certain instances where customers want to have internet-facing NLB, just to name a few -

  1. The application might require high throughput and ultra low latency. In that regard NLB does offer better performance in certain scenarios;
  2. Some companies and applications require end to end encryption and customer does not feel comfortable putting certificate in ALB. NLB enable end-to-end encryption without terminating TLS at the load balancer level.
  3. Customer might have applications built on a custom L4 protocol.
