SES adding tracking to links despite settings

0

I'm trying to work out why links in emails sent through SES API using a Lambda app are being rewritten to awstrack.me despite:

  • No click tracking enabled in my Configuration Set.
  • X-SES-TRACKING: 0 present in headers.
  • Clean links verified in Lambda's input logs.

I've tried adding ses:no-track to the links and they still overwrite. I've logged the raw data in Cloudwatch and the links are definitely clean when they get to Lambda. I've tested wit hand without explicitly declaring a configuration set. The configuration set has no click/open tracking enabled. I've tried a raw message format explicitly adding no-tracking headers. And the received message headers are showing SES-TRACKING: 0

So I'm wondering if there's an account-level setting that might be forcing link tracking? If so, I'd appreciate any suggestions for how I might disable it

Thanks in advance!

Despite disabling click tracking within your configuration set and including headers such as X-SES-TRACKING: 0, Amazon SES may continue to rewrite links if engagement tracking is enabled at the account level through the Virtual Deliverability Manager (VDM), please check on below:

  1. Virtual Deliverability Manager Settings

• Go to the SES Dashboard in the AWS Console. • Navigate to Virtual Deliverability Manager > Settings. • Click Edit under Additional settings. • Turn off Engagement tracking – opens and clicks. • Save your changes. This setting applies globally and can silently override your per-message or per-configuration set preferences.

  1. Confirm Configuration Set Usage If you're using a configuration set, make sure it's explicitly attached to the message. If not, SES may fall back to default behavior, which could include tracking.

  2. Double-Check Message Format If you're using the SendRawEmail API, ensure the headers are correctly formatted and not being stripped or misinterpreted. Sometimes, SES ignores malformed headers silently.

Thank you, that's got it! Tracking was enabled via the VDM. Totally missed that.
