QuickSight Filters Updation Issue

0

Hey QuickSight Team,

Just wanted to raise an issue that if we create a QuickSight Filter then whenever the dataset gets updated, the Filter doesn't update with the new values. We've a lot of filters in our Dashboard and this issue keeps our clients from seeing latest values in the Filters.

Only when we manually uncheck & check the "For all datasets" option, the Filter values gets updated. That's something we can't do for every filter in the Dashboard and that's something the client don't have control at their end too because it exists in QuickSight Analysis not the Dashboard.

Can anyone help me in this regard?

Thank you

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. The behavior you're experiencing with QuickSight filters not automatically updating when the dataset is refreshed is a known limitation.

QuickSight handles data refreshes differently depending on the connection type and data storage method. For datasets that use direct query connections, the data automatically refreshes when you open an associated dataset, analysis, or dashboard. However, for SPICE (Super-fast, Parallel, In-memory Calculation Engine) datasets, the refresh process is different.

For SPICE datasets, QuickSight needs to independently authenticate using stored credentials to connect to the data source. When you refresh a SPICE dataset, it imports the data into SPICE again, including any changes since the last import. However, this refresh doesn't automatically update the filters in your analyses or dashboards.

The workaround you've discovered - unchecking and rechecking the "For all datasets" option - is currently the most straightforward way to force an update of the filter values. Unfortunately, there isn't an automated way to do this for all filters at once.

To mitigate this issue, you might consider the following approaches:

  1. If possible, use direct query connections instead of SPICE for datasets that require frequently updated filter values.

  2. Schedule regular refreshes of your SPICE datasets to ensure the underlying data is up-to-date.

  3. After refreshing the dataset, manually update the filters that need to reflect the new values.

  4. If you're using parameters for filtering, these might update more readily than standard filters.

  5. Consider reaching out to AWS support to request this as a feature enhancement, as automatically updating filter values after a dataset refresh would be beneficial for many users.

We understand this isn't an ideal solution, especially for dashboards with numerous filters. However, these are the current best practices given QuickSight's current functionality. AWS regularly updates QuickSight based on user feedback, so there's a possibility this limitation may be addressed in future updates.
