Which is the Best Replacement for AWS WorkMail?

0

Hi everyone,

With the announcement that AWS WorkMail is being discontinued, I am currently planning the migration of our organization's email infrastructure. I am evaluating a few different alternatives but would love to hear from anyone who has already started or completed this transition.

I am primarily comparing platforms based on three criteria:

Reliability & Uptime: We need a robust platform with excellent deliverability, strong spam filtering, and minimal outages.

Ease of Movement (Migration Path): AWS WorkMail’s native export and native IMAP migration paths are known to have throttling issues and drop folder structures. I am looking for a destination platform that either has great built-in ingestion tools or pairs well with third-party migration utilities to ensure zero data loss.

Budget & Licensing: We are looking for the best value for [Insert number] mailboxes without getting hit by hidden enterprise licensing fees.

For those who have moved away from WorkMail: Did you go with Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, or a different alternative like Zoho/Kopano? How painful was the actual data migration process for your IT team?

Any insights or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated!

Hello! When I see suggestion to use third party services, I'm wondering what's next: third party cloud provider? :)

Amazon WorkMail recommends several third-party solutions as alternatives, including Kopano Cloud, Zoho Mail, and Zoom Mail. These platforms are specifically highlighted as providing comparable capabilities to Amazon WorkMail and include tooling designed to facilitate easier migration. You're also welcome to explore other third-party solutions available in the market.

Regarding your migration concerns, I'd recommend reaching out to AWS Support for guidance on the export process and best practices to minimize data loss during the transition. They can provide specific assistance with mailbox export procedures and help address the throttling and folder structure issues you've mentioned.

For your evaluation criteria around reliability, migration ease, and budget, each of the recommended platforms (Kopano Cloud, Zoho Mail, and Zoom Mail) offers different strengths. Since migration tooling and processes can vary significantly between platforms, I'd suggest directly contacting these providers to understand their specific migration support, uptime guarantees, and pricing structures for your mailbox count.

If you need additional assistance or have specific technical questions about the migration process, AWS Support is available to help guide you through this transition.

  • Is manual migration recommended, or am I better off using solutions like SysTools AWS WorkMail Migration tool?

The main replacements people are actually using after WorkMail are Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. Both have solid migration tools that handle folder structures far better than WorkMail's export. 365 is usually easier for bigger companies, Google workspace is cheaper for smaller teams. Kopano and Zoho are much less common in practice.

  • We are doing a test migration to Workspace and after one week only 3500 emails out of 300,000 have transferred and appears to be stalled. Lots of failures of entire mailboxes. Google Workspace support says AWS is throttling or killing IMAP connections. How can we get the migration to work?
