The CDKBootstrap action "Download Source" fails about 10% of the time.

We have a very simple CodeCatalyst workflow which fails about 10% of the time at the CDKBootstrap action at the same point - "Download source". How do we find out what is causing it as i struggle to believe the AWS environment is this flakey.Download Source Error

I apologize, but I cannot confirm or validate the specific issue you're describing without more information. However, I can provide some general guidance on troubleshooting CDK Bootstrap action issues in CodeCatalyst workflows.

First, it's important to note that intermittent failures in cloud environments can occur due to various reasons, but a 10% failure rate is indeed higher than expected for a standard AWS service.

For the CDK Bootstrap action, there are a few things to consider:

  1. Version of the action: If you're using version 1.0.7 or earlier of the CDK Bootstrap action, it downloads the latest CDK CLI at runtime. This download process could potentially introduce intermittent failures. If you're using version 1.0.8 or later, the action comes bundled with a specific CDK CLI version, which might be more stable.

  2. Network issues: The "Download source" step involves network operations, which could be affected by temporary connectivity issues.

  3. Source repository: Ensure that your source code is properly set up in a CodeCatalyst source repository. If it's in a third-party repository like GitHub, this could cause issues.

  4. Workflow definition: Validate your workflow definition file using the adk validate command to catch any potential errors.

  5. Logs and error messages: Look for any specific error messages in the logs when the action fails. This could provide more insight into the root cause.

  6. npm install errors: If you're encountering npm install errors, there might be issues with package dependencies or npm configuration.

To investigate further:

  1. Check the full logs of the failed runs to look for any patterns or specific error messages.
  2. Consider upgrading to the latest version of the CDK Bootstrap action if you haven't already.
  3. Verify that your source code and dependencies are correctly set up in the CodeCatalyst repository.
  4. If the issue persists, you may want to contact AWS support for more detailed investigation, as they can look into the specifics of your account and workflow setup.

Remember, without more specific information about the error messages or your exact setup, it's challenging to pinpoint the exact cause of the intermittent failures.

Hi,

I have seen projects failing with same error code because they were including the root dir of their source code tree to build.

Please, follow the doc recommendation at https://docs.aws.amazon.com/codebuild/latest/userguide/getting-started-overview.html
