AWS Mainframe Modernization training - Error ODBC while trying to deploy application

0

Hi all, I'm new to AWS world and I started the Mainframe Modernization course on Coursera. I followed the instructions to create a CardDemo application via the Rocket Engine. When trying to deploy the application, it gets stuck for a long time and then returns the following error: "ODBC error while creating VSAM datastore". In the application JSON file I've specified the RDS database name I previously created, along with a new secret containing the database credentials. Moreover, I've tried to fix the issue by switching the database to publicly accessible, but no changes. Is it maybe related to IAM permissions?

Thanks in advance for your answers

The error you're encountering while deploying the CardDemo application in AWS Mainframe Modernization could be related to several factors, but it's not likely to be an IAM permissions issue based on the information provided.

Here are a few things to consider:

  1. Database Configuration: Ensure that the RDS database name and credentials in your application JSON file are correct and match the database you created. Double-check the secret containing the database credentials to make sure it's properly configured.

  2. Network Connectivity: Even though you've made the database publicly accessible, there might still be network connectivity issues. Check that the security group associated with your RDS instance allows inbound traffic from the AWS Mainframe Modernization environment.

  3. VSAM Datastore Creation: The error specifically mentions "ODBC error while creating VSAM datastore." This suggests that there might be an issue with how the VSAM datasets are being mapped to the relational database. Verify that your application configuration correctly defines the VSAM to RDS mappings.

  4. Runtime Environment: Ensure that the runtime environment for your application is properly set up and configured to work with the Rocket Software (formerly Micro Focus) engine.

  5. Application Deployment Process: Review the steps you've taken to deploy the application. Make sure you've selected the correct runtime environment that corresponds to your CardDemo application when deploying.

If you've verified these points and are still encountering issues, you may want to:

  1. Check the application logs for more detailed error messages.
  2. Review the AWS Mainframe Modernization documentation for any specific troubleshooting steps related to ODBC or VSAM datastore creation.
  3. Consider redeploying the application after double-checking all configurations.

If the problem persists, you might need to reach out to AWS support or consult with your course instructors for more specific guidance tailored to the Coursera training environment.

I tried to create a stack from scratch by following the link posted, and I finally had the same issue. I tried to add a new inbound rule but nothing changed. In my view this should be a straight-forward process since the stack is intended to create every component automatically, whereas I had to modify the yaml file to be able to create the application. But what is totally unacceptable is that I have been billed 69.50 USD for 'AWS Mainframe Modernization EUW3-m5.largeEnterpriseServer', while this shoould be just a training for individuals. I have deleted everything and I hope the billing will stop.
