It appears you're experiencing an issue with uploading ZIP files to AWS CloudShell in the eu-central-1 region. This problem could be related to a few different factors:
-
Regional Issues: There have been reports of CloudShell not working properly in specific regions, including eu-central-1. This could be due to temporary service disruptions or regional-specific problems.
-
Browser Compatibility: While you've tried both Firefox and Chromium, there might still be browser-related issues affecting file uploads. Ensure your browsers are fully updated to the latest versions.
-
Service Status: It's worth checking the AWS Service Health Dashboard to see if there are any reported incidents or service disruptions affecting CloudShell in your region.
-
File Upload Limitations: CloudShell has specific file upload limitations and supported formats. While ZIP is indeed the officially supported format for multiple file uploads, the fact that you were previously able to upload tar.xz files suggests there might have been changes to the service.
To troubleshoot this issue:
-
Try uploading the ZIP file in a different AWS region to see if the problem is specific to eu-central-1.
-
Clear your browser cache and cookies, then attempt the upload again.
-
If possible, try uploading from a different network to rule out any network connectivity issues.
-
Consider using alternative methods for uploading multiple files, such as using Amazon S3 as an intermediary. You can upload your files to an S3 bucket and then sync them to your CloudShell environment.
-
If the problem persists, it would be advisable to contact AWS Support directly or post in the AWS CloudShell Discussion Forum for more specific assistance.
Remember that CloudShell provides 1 GB of persistent storage per region in your home directory. Ensure you're not exceeding this limit when attempting to upload files.

- Upload actually works in other regions, so it seems it's a region-related outage.
- CloudShell AWS Health Dashboard has had no official outage in the past few months.
- Cleaning up the cache didn't help.
- Cleaning up the cookies required me to re-login but didn't help.
- Using an intermediate S3 is not an option in my case.

I think I have found the culprit. In the sense I can consistently reproduce or avoid the problem. In any region.
At every container restart (CloudShell is not a VM!) I am installing a tool called
tenvand from that I am installingterraform. All under/usr/local/bin. I do that in a script I put in$HOME/.bashrc.d. Those are static linux x86_64 binaries which work very well in CloudShell but are not available in AWS repos. But this is SOMEHOW causing the upload problem. If I disable the installation of terraform (while still installing tenv), both upload and download work. I have also tried installations under/usr/binand even/tmp/bin. No way. The point is not "why is this happening" but rather "how do I fix/workaround it".
