after adding few more lines in our sagemaker lifecycle on_start script we started getting error for the 16KB size limit , Error: expected length of on_start to be in the range (0 - 16384), got CiMhL2Jpbi9iYXNoCiMgYWRhcHRlZCBmcm9tOiBodHRwczovL2dpdGh.........

I would like to understand why such a limit exist. also why do we have only 3 repo limit for sagemaker?

I understand you're hitting the size limit with your on_start script and wondering about these SageMaker limitations. Let me explain what we know from the AWS documentation:

About the on_start Script Size Limitation

The error you're seeing is expected - AWS SageMaker enforces a strict 16,384 character (16KB) size limit for lifecycle configuration scripts, including on_start scripts. When you exceed this limit, you'll get exactly the error you encountered.

To work around this limitation, you can:

  • Store your larger scripts in S3 and use a smaller on_start script to download and execute them
  • Break down your script into smaller, modular components
  • For dependency installations, consider using custom container images instead

Regarding the Repository Limit

For your question about repository limits, AWS SageMaker allows:

  • One default repository
  • Up to three additional repositories (making a total of four allowed repositories).

While AWS documentation clearly states these limits, it doesn't explicitly explain the reasoning behind either the 16KB script size or the repository limit. For official guidance specific to your use case, I'd recommend reaching out to AWS Support and they’ll help you with the most suitable approach.
