Windows Server 2019/2022 EC2 – No interactive desktop or GPU context after Hibernate until RDP login

0

I’m running a Windows Server 2019 (also tested on 2022) EC2 instance with auto-logon enabled. After resuming the instance from Hibernate, applications that depend on a GUI or hardware-accelerated graphics fail to initialize properly — it seems that Windows doesn’t recreate an interactive desktop or a GPU rendering context until I connect through RDP.

Here’s what I observe:

  • After resume, processes that normally start in the user session appear in Task Manager, but no visible desktop exists.
  • As soon as I RDP into the instance, the display driver loads, a desktop is created, and everything immediately works.
  • Cold boot (Stop → Start) behaves normally — desktop and GPU are initialized automatically.

On AWS EC2 (Windows Server 2019/2022), is there a supported method to re-create an interactive desktop or GPU context automatically after hibernate, without a manual RDP login

On AWS EC2 Windows instances, there is no supported method to automatically recreate an interactive desktop or GPU rendering context after hibernate without a user session being established. The Windows graphics stack and GPU drivers are only fully initialized when a session is created (e.g., via RDP). If you need GUI or GPU workloads to resume automatically, the recommended approach is to avoid hibernate and instead use Stop/Start or design your workload to run in a non-ianteractive session (services, scheduled tasks, or headless GPU APIs).
