Which AWS Associate certification should I prioritize for a Cloud Engineer role, and what projects best build real-world skills?

1

Hello everyone,

I’ve recently earned the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner and come from a cybersecurity background (INE eEDA), with hands-on experience in security fundamentals, networking, and monitoring.

My goal is to become a Cloud Engineer (with a long-term interest in cloud security). I’m now planning my next associate-level certification and would appreciate guidance from those working in the field.

I’d like advice on:

  1. Which associate certification should I prioritize first for a Cloud Engineer role: Solutions Architect – Associate SysOps Administrator – Associate

  2. From a practical skills perspective, which certification aligns most with real day-to-day cloud engineering tasks?

  3. What hands-on projects would you recommend alongside certification prep to build a strong, job-ready skill set?

Any insights based on real-world experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Congratulations on earning your AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification! For your next step toward becoming a Cloud Engineer with a long-term interest in cloud security, I can provide some guidance based on the AWS certification paths.

For a Cloud Engineer role, both the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate and AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate would be valuable, but they emphasize different skill sets:

The SysOps Administrator – Associate certification would likely be more aligned with day-to-day cloud engineering tasks. This certification deepens your knowledge of systems operations, including monitoring, automation, security implementation, and performance optimization. It's particularly valuable for those interested in the operational aspects of cloud computing, which aligns well with cloud engineering responsibilities.

The Solutions Architect – Associate provides a solid understanding of AWS services and architectural principles, which is also important but focuses more on design than operations.

Given your cybersecurity background and interest in cloud security, the SysOps path might be particularly relevant as it covers security implementation in operational contexts.

For hands-on projects to build job-ready skills alongside your certification preparation, consider:

  1. Building and maintaining infrastructure as code using AWS CloudFormation or Terraform
  2. Setting up monitoring and alerting systems with CloudWatch
  3. Implementing automated security controls and compliance checks
  4. Creating CI/CD pipelines for application deployment
  5. Designing and implementing backup and disaster recovery solutions

These projects will reinforce your learning while providing practical experience that demonstrates your capabilities to potential employers. Remember that while certifications validate your knowledge, hands-on experience with personal projects will significantly strengthen your overall cloud computing expertise and make you more competitive in the job market.

Certification Order

Start with Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA)

  • Most recognized by employers and recruiters
  • Builds foundational architecture knowledge needed for everything else
  • Broader service coverage = better interview prep
  • Then SysOps for operational depth.

Day-to-Day Alignment

  • SysOps actually aligns more with daily cloud engineering tasks (monitoring, troubleshooting, automation)
  • But SAA-first still makes sense—you need to understand why systems are built before managing how they run

Hands-On Projects (Job-Ready Focus)

  • Deploy a 3-tier app with VPC, public/private subnets, ALB, EC2/ECS, RDS
  • IaC with Terraform or CloudFormation – non-negotiable skill
  • CI/CD pipeline (CodePipeline or GitHub Actions → deploy to AWS)
  • CloudWatch dashboards + alarms with SNS notifications
  • IAM deep-dive – custom policies, role

Given Your Security Background Consider the Security Specialty after SAA—your eEDA experience gives you a head start, and cloud security engineers are in high demand.

I would suggest you to learn about Solutions Architect – Associate and CloudOps Administrator – Associate. Both these certifications are quite good and could you make a move towards your goal. Once you have completed these, build applications in AWS and see if you can use the concepts you learnt. Build infrastructure as code for deployment. For security, it's good to learn AWS security services but it's important to learn foundations like zero trust principles, defence in depth and it's good to do cloud agnostic security certification. Having said that, I have done both AWS cloud security and ISC CCSP.
