Transfer the ownership of some of the sidewalk wireless device to another AWS account

0

Hi all,

If I want to merely transfer some of the sidewalk wireless device's ownership to another AWS account, is that possible on AWS? If not, may I ask why is that?

Unfortunately, it is not currently possible to directly transfer ownership of individual Sidewalk wireless devices from one AWS account to another. AWS IoT Core for Amazon Sidewalk does not have a built-in feature to transfer device ownership between accounts.

The reason for this limitation is likely due to the way Sidewalk devices are managed and integrated within the AWS IoT Core infrastructure. Each Sidewalk device is associated with a specific AWS account during the onboarding process, and this association is tightly coupled with the account's configuration, permissions, and resources.

If you need to move Sidewalk devices to a different account, you would need to remove the devices from the current account and then re-add them to the new account. This process would involve:

  1. Removing the device from the original AWS account
  2. Resetting the device (if necessary)
  3. Adding the device to the new AWS account using the CreateWirelessDevice API operation or the create-wireless-device CLI command

This process essentially creates a new device registration in the target account rather than transferring existing ownership.

It's worth noting that while some AWS resources (like Elastic IP addresses) can be transferred between accounts through support requests, this capability has not been extended to Sidewalk devices in AWS IoT Core for Amazon Sidewalk.

If device transfer is a critical requirement for your use case, you may want to contact AWS Support to inquire about any potential future plans for this feature or to discuss alternative solutions that might meet your needs.
