EKS v1.21 extended support

0

Hello, i have a EKS cluster running in version 1.21. The extended support ends on 15th of July and although the new cluster is almost ready we would like to have the option to extend our deadline a bit further just in case. Is that something that AWS would allow, even if with an extra fee? If so, how can i do it?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Amazon EKS doesn't offer manual extensions on deadlines for standard or extended support. There is an automated extended support option available, but it might not be ideal for your situation

Automated Extended Support (with Fee): EKS offers automatic extended support starting from version 1.21. This kicks in after the standard support ends (14 months from launch). However, there's a caveat:

Extended support incurs an additional charge of $0.60 per cluster per hour starting May 1st, 2024 [AWS EKS Extended Support Pricing]. While this gives you some extra time, it might not be ideal for a long delay due to the cost.

  • The problem in this case is that, from my understanding, the official extended support ends on 15th of July, even though we were only charged extra (about 0.60c) for the last month. In any case it would be more of a backup solution in case of potential delays, but nothing too prolonged.

Does not look like you can have further extension. Quoting from documentation

If you haven’t updated your cluster before the extended support period ends, your cluster is auto-upgraded to the oldest currently supported extended version.
