AWS IAM user for desktop access?

0

I have the impression that somehow, on AWS, you can make an "IAM user" that will store a key on your desktop, allowing for logins from a specific machine without using the authenticator app. But I can't figure out how to do it from the AWS documentation I was able to find.

Is this actually possible? If so, can someone help me understand how to do it and/or point me to the right documents?

Many thanks!

Hi,

Yes, it's definitely possible via AWS profiles that you can create with AWS CLI

See https://docs.aws.amazon.com/cli/v1/userguide/cli-configure-files.html for all details.

You can have multiple such profiles if you need to access multiple AWS accounts or change user / credentials in one single account.

You may also want to read this article for the how-to of profiles: https://iriscompanyio.medium.com/how-to-set-up-and-use-multiple-aws-profiles-using-aws-cli-00881cf93f4c

Best,

  • OK, I looked through those pages and I think I understand how I can set up a profile in my home directory containing the appropriate key, and that it will then be available to the CLI. Will this key then be available to my browser also? Or can I make it available to the browser? I'm not actually using the CLI. I'm accessing AWS through the Web with a browser.

Sorry, re:Post Agent can't answer your question because the response could contain advice related to security or compliance ...

I'm not providing any information, nor am I asking anything about my specific account. I'm just asking for a generic answer. It this possible? What's the general procedure or where's the right documentation.
