Can I use DMS to move Oracle schemas in RDS

0

Hi Can you use AWS Database Migration Service to move several oracle 19c schemas from existing oracle RDS (account 1) instance to another new oracle RDS (account 2) instance or not? The second instance is brand new and does not have any oracle schemas.

My understanding DMS can only move data from source to destination but will not create the DDL required to create objects like tables, triggers, constraints, views, packages, procedures, etc. similar to what data pump expdp/impdp can do..

Hi Sam, AWS Schema Conversion Tool (SCT) can be used to create your target database based on definitions of the source one. See https://aws.amazon.com/dms/schema-conversion-tool/

More info about SCT UI: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/SchemaConversionTool/latest/userguide/CHAP_UserInterface.html

Oracle is among the supported source databases: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/SchemaConversionTool/latest/userguide/CHAP_Source.Oracle.html

How-to of Oracle migration with SCT + DMS: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/SchemaConversionTool/latest/userguide/CHAP_Source.Oracle.html

  • It seems there is still some manual work to do using SCT to copy oracle schemas from one RDS to another and it is one schema at a time. It sounds using data pump export/import might be easier.

Have you seen a video or article that shows the details of copying oracle schema/database using SCT?

According to this: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/dms/latest/userguide/CHAP_Target.Oracle.html

When using Oracle as a target, AWS DMS migrates all tables and indexes to default table and index tablespaces in the target.

It also has limitations such as lack of automatic schema creation: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/dms/latest/userguide/CHAP_Target.Oracle.html#CHAP_Target.Oracle.Limitations

  • That might require some manual work if there large number of schemas to move. I am not sure if it will create all objects in new schema and then copy data.

Have you seen a video that demonstrates how this is done? It seems might be more reliable to use an export data pump for this.
