What does this mean: 'This market type is not supported without a capacity reservation'?

I'm getting a configuration error when setting up a p3.2xlarge EC2 instance, with the message: 'This market type is not supported without a capacity reservation.' How do I fix this?

The error message "This market type is not supported without a capacity reservation" typically indicates that you're trying to launch a specialized instance type (in this case, a p3.2xlarge) using a specific market type that requires a capacity reservation.

To resolve this issue, you need to set up and use a Capacity Reservation for your p3.2xlarge instance. Capacity Reservations allow you to reserve compute capacity for your Amazon EC2 instances in a specific Availability Zone for any duration.

Here are the steps to fix this issue:

  1. Create a Capacity Reservation for your p3.2xlarge instance type in the desired Availability Zone.

  2. When launching your instance, you need to specify that you want to use a Capacity Reservation. You have several options:

    a. Open: This will launch the instance into any matching Capacity Reservation that has sufficient capacity.

    b. Target specific: You can specify a particular Capacity Reservation to use.

    c. Capacity Reservation group: You can specify a group of Capacity Reservations to use.

  3. Make sure your instance's attributes (instance type, platform, and Availability Zone) match those of the Capacity Reservation you're targeting.

  4. Ensure that the Capacity Reservation has sufficient available capacity for your instance.

If you're using the AWS CLI to launch your instance, you'll need to include the --capacity-reservation-specification parameter in your run-instances command, specifying the appropriate Capacity Reservation details.

By properly setting up and using a Capacity Reservation, you should be able to launch your p3.2xlarge instance without encountering the "market type not supported" error.
