How do I restore an Amazon EC2 instance from an Amazon EBS snapshot?

I want to identify and restore an Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instance from an Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) root volume snapshot.

Resolution

Prerequisite: Make sure that your AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) user or role has the required permissions to use the runbook. For more information, see the Required IAM permissions section of AWSSupport-RestoreEC2InstanceFromSnapshot.

Run the Systems Manager automation runbook

  1. Open the AWS Systems Manager console.
  2. In the navigation pane, choose Documents.
  3. In the search bar, enter RestoreEC2InstanceFromSnapshot.
  4. Choose the AWSSupport-RestoreEC2InstanceFromSnapshot document.
  5. Choose Execute automation.
  6. Choose Execute.

  7. After the automation completes, review the detailed results in the Outputs section.
