Too frequent Redshift automated snapshots

1

Hello,

My team and I have an issue with too frequent automated snapshots. Our automated backups are configured to be performed every 8 hours, but it happens that they are scheduled like every 15-20 minutes for the period of 2 hours and then are back to normal behaviour. Is there any explanation to this? I couldn't find anything in doc about it.

Regards,
Mateusz

Hi mateuszz,

Is you cluster configure for automated snapshots? If so, the doc clearly states the triggering intervals, time or block written (data modified) since the last automated snapshot.

Otherwise if you have completely disabled automated snapshots then you should be in complete control of when any manual snapshots are created.

Please be advised that a recent billing policy change in snapshot storage cost has made keeping all be a few manual snapshots of a cluster very costly compared to letting Redshift take automated snapshots for no additional cost.

So, make sure you're fully aware of what you're asking for, including the billed cost, or you're in for some rude surprises at billing time.

Regards,
-Kurt
